The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a book that all young children love and read at least once in their life time for sure. Its has so many teachable opportunities whether its days of the week, names of different fruits, counting, metamorphosis... the list can go on and on.
We decided to bring a little twist to this story by weaving in the concept of gratitude.
Gratitude for Food
We discussed that the caterpillar eats lots of food to grow strong and we can be thankful for the food that helps us grow too.

Gratitude for Safety & Comfort
Children noticed that he rests in a warm, cozy cocoon. We brainstormed how we can all be thankful for our homes, beds, and people who keep us safe.

Gratitude for Growing & Learning
Towards the end of the book, the caterpillar changes and becomes a beautiful butterfly.
We connected with this change and reflected that we grow too and there are lots of people and things that help us to grow- school, home, books and friends. We can be thankful for learning new things every day and for people who support our growth.
Just like the caterpillar gets what he needs to grow, we get many things every day.We can say THANK YOU for food, home, friends, and for growing a little bit each day.
We ended the lesson by drawing things we are grateful for.
